Intel cans IDF Taiwan 2009


According to a report from Digitimes, chip giant Intel is canceling IDF Taiwan 2009. The Intel Developer Forum is a technology convention focused on Intel products and is a chance for Intel to unveil new products and roadmaps to the press, analysts, and industry insiders.

There were three IDF events in 2008 so having one less isn’t a major loss, though it is a sign of the tough economic times that every company, including Intel, is facing right now. The flagship event–IDF 2009 San Francisco–is still planned for September 22-24, 2009 at the Moscone Center as is the April event at Beijing International Convention Center. The lack of a Taipei event, which would have run from November 16-17, means Intel will skip this important manufacturing and technology area, but it was close enough to the San Francisco IDF that is was clearly the one to be dropped. Intel’s presence at Computex 2009 should help offset the loss of this particular Forum though.

Welcome News For Builders: Intel, AMD Slash Chip Prices




There's at least one silver lining to the terrible economy: System builders trying to survive can at least appreciate that hardware vendors in the same boat are starting to offer bargain-basement deals on components--the kind of savings that can be passed on to their own reluctant customers.


It's the old quandary: The market isn't buying, inventory is sitting around costing companies money and it has become crucial to get parts out the door by any means possible. "Inventory is king," said Intel (NSDQ:INTC) Corp. CEO Paul Otellini during the company's recent fourth-quarter earnings call.


Intel, Santa Clara, Calif., and Advanced Micro Devices Inc., Sunnyvale, Calif., have led the charge on clearing out inventory, slashing prices for their processors in a mid-January exchange that looked on the surface like the old price wars but seemed to have more of a desperate edge. The chip makers were hit hard in the fourth quarter by demand drying up downstream.


Thus, falling revenues and renewed competition from AMD (NYSE:AMD) added up to aggressive new pricing from Intel, including 40 percent price cuts for Intel's top Core 2 quad and Xeon parts.


Intel took its sagging sales figures head on in mid-January, slashing prices for 20 older processors by as much as 48 percent and debuting several new, low-power chips. With the chip giant's disappointing fourth-quarter numbers reflecting tough times for its distribution channel as well, Intel partners like Bill Paschick were encouraged by the price cuts.


"We mainly focus on the quad-cores, the 9550 and 9650, so it really is helpful," said Paschick, president of Rain Recording, Ringwood, N.J., a builder of high-performance desktop and mobile audio workstations.


Intel cut the price for the 3.0GHz Q9650 processor by 40 percent, from $530 down to $316. It also dropped the price on its 2.83GHz Core 2 quad Q9550 from $316 to $266. Other adjustments included price cuts for the 2.66GHz Q9400 (from $266 to $213), the 2.50GHz Q8300 (from $224 to $183) and the Q8200 (from $193 to $163).


Whether the price cuts have more to do with Intel's own inventory needs or some pressure from the well-received new Phenom II desktop processors from AMD, Paschick said better deals on older product are more than welcome.


AMD answered back a few days later with price cuts of its own. It slashed prices for its very latest, top-of-the-line Phenom II quad-core desktop processors. The chip maker took its 3.0GHz Phenom II X4 940 Black Edition from $275 down to $225 and its 2.8GHz Phenom II X4 920 from $235 to $195.


Meanwhile, Intel's newest family of processors, the first three Nehalem-class Core i7 chips released last November, continue to be priced at their initial levels, including $999 for the 3.20GHz Core i7-965 Extreme Edition. The top quad-core part from the older Core 2 architecture, the 3.2GHz Core 2 Extreme QX9775, is still the most expensive non-server/workstation chip in Intel's stable at $1,499.


Intel also cut prices for two Core 2 Duo parts, several Pentium and Celeron chips and the top four Xeon server processors in its X3000 series for 1p servers. The biggest price cut in percentage terms was the 48 percent reduction for the 2.26GHz Celeron 570 mobile processor, from $134 to $70.


It also quietly introduced several new energy-efficient processors manufactured at Intel's current 45nm process node. These include three new 45nm Core 2 quad desktop parts designated with an "s" -- the 2.83GHz Q9550s (12 MB L2 cache, $369), 2.66GHz Q9400s (6 MB, $320) and 2.33GHz Q8200s (4 MB, $245).


Paschick also singled out Intel's new dual-core Pentium T3400, a 2.16GHz mobile processor released at the end of last year, as a very attractive alternative to equivalent Core 2 Duo chips in the $200 to $300 price range. The T3400 doesn't appear on Intel's new price list, but VARBusiness found the processor available online for prices as low as $64.


The custom-system builder has at least one notebook giant thinking the same thing--Toshiba built its newly released Satellite L305-S5921 around the Pentium T3400.


Intel, which suffered a 19 percent sequential drop in revenue for the just-concluded financial quarter, is projecting a continuation of that trend in the current three-month period, according to executives. AMD, which has laid off more than 1,000 employees in recent weeks, reported a loss of $1.42 billion for the fourth quarter of 2008.

Cisco, Intel and Microsoft Lead Collaboration to Improve Global Education Assessments

PISA, TIMSS Join Forces with Cisco, Intel and Microsoft to Develop Next Generation of Assessments

LONDON, Jan. 13, 2009 – Three leading technology companies announced today a collaboration aimed at transforming global educational assessment and improving learning outcomes. At the Learning and Technology World Forum in London, Cisco, Intel and Microsoft unveiled plans to underwrite a multi-sector research project to develop new assessment approaches, methods and technologies for measuring the success of 21st-century teaching and learning in classrooms around the world. During the session, the three companies called upon educational leaders, governments and other corporations to join in the effort.

The three companies also announced the appointment of Barry McGaw PhD, currently the director of the Melbourne Education Research Institute at the University of Melbourne, as executive director of the project. McGaw will oversee an executive committee, project lead team, and up to 50 leading experts and innovators in academia and government, to collaborate on the research and assist in influencing the development of future international and national assessments.

With an extensive background in academia and research, McGaw has served as the director for Education at the Organization for Economic Co-Operation and Development (OECD) where he was involved with international education assessments in the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA).

"Shrinking resources and market pressures mean that education can no longer be the sole responsibility of governments," said McGaw. "Building the future workforce will require a commitment from the private sector to partner with public institutions. Reforming assessment is essential to enabling any systemic change in education. And change on a global scale is required to equip students of today with the skills they need to succeed in the workforce of tomorrow. PISA's international education assessments focus on key competencies in reading, mathematics and science. In PISA 2003, we took a step by adding an assessment of problem solving, but one limited to analogical reasoning. We hoped to add information and communications technology (ICT) competence in PISA 2006 but did not succeed. We all need now to work together to advance assessment practice."

The assessment research and development project spearheaded by Cisco, Intel and Microsoft has received the support of major international assessment organizations. Specifically, OECD and the International Association of the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA) have expressed interest in using the evidence-based and verifiable output of the 21st-century skills assessment to inform the development of the next versions of PISA and Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS), their respective international benchmarks.

"In the global economy, it is the world's best performing education systems, not simply improvement by national standards, that have become the yardstick for educational success," said Andreas Schleicher, Head of Education Indicators and Analysis, OECD. "That is why more and more countries measure the relative strengths and weaknesses of their education systems with OECD's global PISA assessments. To do so effectively, it is crucially important that these assessments continue to evolve to reflect the skills that matter for individuals and economies. Technology-based assessments will be critical to this and the project brings together key partners that can help PISA make this happen".

"IEA is committed to the greater integration of IT into all its assessments, especially TIMSS and the Progress in International Reading Literacy Study," said Seamus Hegarty, chair of the IEA. "This reflects the changes in learning environments and the potential of technology to enhance the teaching and learning process. Based on extensive research1, Cisco, Intel and Microsoft concluded that most education systems have not kept pace with the dramatic changes in the economy and the skill sets that are required for students to succeed. These skills include the ability to think critically and creatively; to work cooperatively; and to adapt to the evolving use of technology in business and society.

The project will focus on several key areas that will offer the most promising opportunities for transforming education and assessment. Teams of educators and academics will focus on enabling education assessment methodologies and technologies, effective learning environments, and replicable ICT-enabled teaching and assessment methods that foster the development and assessment of the skills students will need to succeed. To accelerate the project in time to influence the next versions of PISA and TIMSS, the project will review successful classroom practices for the teaching and testing of 21st-century skills and draw implications for large-scale assessments.

The addition of the new convertible PC will coexist with the very successful clamshell design, which is being used in Portugal's Magalhães (Magellan) Initiative – the Portuguese government's country-wide program to provide PCs to all elementary school children via the local computer manufacturer and telecom service providers. The Magalhães Initiative is one of most comprehensive educational technology programs in the world and other countries, like Venezuela, are working with Portugal to extend this model for their country. The Initiative reflects the scale of programs targeted for the Intel Learning Series.

Intel also unveiled its collaboration with JP Sá Couto, the local OEM in Portugal, and a local design company, CEIIA, to develop a new design of the Magalhães PC that will include features such as unique reading and writing capabilities, a larger screen, more memory for local content and additional connectivity options such as 3G and WiMAX. These new features meet the unique needs of Portugal and will be offered in addition to the existing solutions as part of the Magalhães Program.

Intel Reveals New In-Store Concept


Revolutionary Kiosk Demonstration Combines Benefits of Internet Shopping, Customer Service Benefits, Energy Savings

NATIONAL RETAIL FEDERATION CONVENTION, New York, Jan. 12, 2009 – Taking advantage of a high-performing and energy-efficient chip the company already sells to computer makers, Intel Corporation today unveiled a retail point-of-sale (POS) proof-of-concept system that could lower a store's total cost of ownership while improving customer satisfaction.

Revealed at the National Retail Federation Convention (NRF) in New York, Intel's proof-of-concept exhibits the latest in digital signage and point-of-sale technology in a kiosk form factor, and demonstrates how technology can enhance the retail shopping experience.

Accommodating consumer preferences for self-service fueled by e-commerce trends, the kiosk demonstration includes features that match the perks of Internet shopping, such as suggestive selling real-time inventory access, as well as showing promotions, product details and customer reviews. These features, in turn, facilitate sales associate up-selling and cross-selling opportunities, which will increase a retailer's bottom line and customer loyalty.

The POS demo is based on the very popular and energy-efficient 45nm Intel® Core™2 Duo mobile processor that is inside hundreds of millions of today's laptops and PCs. Compared with legacy POS platforms, the processor in the demo can enable more than a 70 percent reduction in required power use while still providing as much as double the amount of raw processing performance as previous generations of processors.1 As such, energy savings from this POS system are passed on to retailers by way of lower energy bills.

This effort is expected to provide consumers with richer and more seamless Web-based and video viewing experiences through advanced Intel-based cable set-top boxes, Blu-ray Disc players, digital TVs and retail connected AV devices.

The high-definition capabilities of the Adobe Flash Platform, together with the Intel® Media Processor CE 3100, the first in a new family of purpose-built Intel System on Chips (SoCs) for CE devices, creates a powerful entertainment hub capable of delivering rich Web content and Adobe Flash based applications to an array of Internet-connected CE devices. Intel and Adobe are working together to optimize both the Adobe Flash Player and Adobe Flash Lite™ for the CE3100. Intel plans to ship the first CE3100 with support for an optimized implementation of Adobe Flash Lite before mid-2009.

The two companies are uniquely positioned to support consistent Internet content across PCs, laptops, netbooks, mobile Internet devices (MIDs) and now the TV, extending the shared business objectives of accelerating rich video and Internet content across the full breadth of consumer devices.

Intel and Adobe have a long history of technical collaboration, including, most recently, being founding members of the Open Screen Project. Announced in May 2008, the Open Screen Project is designed to enable a consistent runtime environment across screens. The initiative has 20 major industry partners and is dedicated to enable Web content, standalone applications and full Web browsing across televisions, set-top boxes, mobile devices and other consumer electronics that take advantage of Adobe® AIR™ and Adobe Flash capabilities.
